We were founded in 1992, so clearly we are in this for the long haul.

Interim

With over 20 years’ experience in the interim legal market, our
private practice team has an outstanding record of success. 

The interim option has a number of advantages for clients and candidates alike, particularly in this ever-changing market.

Interim staff are useful for several reasons:

  • To cover maternity, holiday or sickness leave;

  • Headcount restrictions on the permanent side;

  • To assist with projects – e.g. regulatory, due diligence etc;

  • Covering workflow – it can often take at least four months to hire someone permanent due to notice periods;

  • Coping with increased workflow without committing permanently; or  

  • Trying someone before committing to a permanent hire.

Clients often require someone to start within a few days or weeks.  We’re used to sourcing candidates within hours, whilst also managing the interview process.

We handle all administration, including payroll and referencing to make the process as efficient and cost-effective to our clients. This includes pre and post reference screening and managing holiday pay, national insurance and tax whether that be via PAYE or a limited company.

Paralegals/Doc Review

Our consultants have over 15 years’ paralegal and doc review recruitment experience between them and have built up a network of loyal clients, ranging from top UK firms, US firms, specialist boutiques and in-house organisations.

The team work with a real mixture of candidates, including LLB/GDL graduates, future trainees and career paralegals looking for their next move. We work on temp, interim & permanent roles and cover many practice areas. Our busiest area tends to be litigation, where clients need paralegals at very short notice.

Paralegal and Non-Qualified

The paralegal and contract manager market has become significantly busier over the years due to the impact that it is has on efficiency and costs. Some of our clients employ paralegals to undertake more of the routine and administrative work so as to free up the lawyers’ time so that they can focus on more of the complex matters and relationship aspects. Over the past few years, we have also noticed a number of start-up and small legal teams employing paralegals to support a sole counsel or team of mid-level/senior lawyers to almost mirror the work that a junior lawyer would generally be expected to cover. This is usually achieved by recruiting a paralegal with a little experience who can be trained up or at least two years’ solid paralegal experience with the ability to grasp things quickly and a positive attitude. This can prove to be extremely cost effective given that the salary of a paralegal can generally be between £22K to £50K depending on their level of experience. 

We appreciate that our clients’ needs and budget are going to vary.  The pool of candidates that we work with is wide ranging and consists of the following:

  • Overseas-qualified lawyers with no UK experience may also benefit from gaining paralegal experience to assist in entering into the qualified market through developing some experience more relevant to the UK market; 

  • LPC and law graduates who wish to broaden their skill-set and start earning; or

  • Newly qualified lawyers who would like to continue building on their experience whilst they explore qualified opportunities.

ISDA Negotiators

With the derivative trading documentation market being very specialised and there being a limited pool of candidates with this skill set in the market, working with specialist recruiters in this field is valuable.   Our consultants at EJ Legal have over 20 years' experience recruiting ISDA, GMRA, GMSLA and commodity negotiators into a range of institutions including investment banks, small European banks, asset managers and commodity houses.
